This is my beginners music guide to capturing maximum royalties for your songs, it’s what I’ve learned in the first two years of the indie music business. If you are just starting off in the music business, the multiple ways to collect royalties from your songs, plays, and performances might seems overwhelming, confusing, or you may have not heard of some of these methods. My hope is that soon the revenue streams will simplify or be more publicized, by here is how it is January 2023.
Registering your songs with PROs
If your song is or is not, released, recorded, or just a nebulous idea, you can register it with your Performing Rights Organization or PRO and receive royalties with it it played or performed.
There are 3 PROs in the United States, choose one and only one. I’m with ASCAP and will go into their streaming royalties from online live streams later in the article. They all seem to be basically the same, but I went with this paid option because mesmi (my song co-writer and producer for One with the Cosmos was with them).
ASCAP costs $100 when you sign up as a song writer and a publisher (which you want to sign up for if you own the masters for your song). Even if you aren’t a publisher, you’ll want to register as a vanity publisher so you can receive both sides of your…
