High Expectations Set You up for Disappointment

Don’t be too attached to the outcome or rather don’t have high expectations, because they will set you up for disappointment. As much as I’ve been so excited and had all these lofty ideas for how things might be, then the event happened, it wasn’t nearly up to my expectations and I was disappointed. The event (I had several of these in 2022, until I learned this lesson) wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t as amazing as I built it up to be in my mind.

I’ve mostly been living by this life advice and not being too attached to the outcomes. Here’s an example: I had a pool party in August, before I learned this lesson, and a lot of people said they were going to come, on the day of about 10 of them canceled and there were only 19 of my closest friends and family. Only 19? Yes, I was disappointed because many of the people saying they were coming, were not able to come. By a different standard, hosting a party where 19 people came and had a great time should have been a success, but it wasn’t.

After I learned this lesson, I hosted a New Year Party, we invited 10 people and 0 came. It was just Bryan and I, and I was happy with that. I wasn’t attached to the outcome anymore. I can invite people, but if they don’t want to or can’t come, I am ok with that, I wasn’t disappointed.

But what is to be said of anticipation and excitement? I had a friend coming over I was way too excited about, maybe you could even say starstruck, or in love, or some weird word that made me way too excited about him…
