I have to laugh, I was writing to the prompt, by Alecia Renece in her 5 day song writing challenge, what is the best piece of advice you can remember? And the answer can in the form of a paradox.

I was an undergraduate at the University of Southern Indiana, pursing my degree in business administration along with art, because business admin had much more general core before I had to decide what to emphasize in. I’d done as much core as possible and still had no idea what I wanted to be when I grew up. I was accepted in to school on a partial art scholarship and had to complete a degree in art to receive the full amount of the partial scholarship, I’d eventually choose graphic design because it was the most practical with the most potential to earn a steady living. But I wanted even more stability. I kept shopping around, doing job shadows, and exploring my options.

I was at a job shadow talking with an accountant and she asked me why I wanted to be an accountant. I replied that I didn’t know, it just seemed like a good job, my passion was in art, but I was here to find a job. She told me not to be an account, to go pursue art.

I look back on that moment now with tears in my eyes. Purse art I did. I rounded my four year degree out with an additional two year degree in business in 4.5 years (over achiever) and received a fellowship for one year to host an exhibition at my college. That year was a godsend, I made so many pieces of art and experimented with creation.

I’m still an artist now, but I focus more on wellness, well-being, and ways to create things…
