Immersive Van Gogh Cleveland, Ohio: A Let Down
I didn’t know exactly what to expect, but I expected more than projectors, animated paintings, and some lovely music.
If I wanted to get something from the gift shop, the size of that in comparison to the exhibit more than delivered, but, alas, I came for more than the gift shop.
When we first walked into the large room, advertised at 300,000 cubic square feet (what they don’t say is how many square feet it is: around 4,481, the size of a large house) I thought this is a cool way to start an exhibition. But the longer we stayed in the room watching the half hour film, the more it dawned on us: this is it. This is the exhibition. Which is a bit of a let down for tickets that were advertised at $40 a piece during non-peak hours but ended up costing $50 a piece for two tickets after all the service fees.
Don’t get me wrong, the production vale and the sheer amount of projectors needed to fill this room was pretty out of this world. The floor, mirrors, and walls were all covered in art. But bang for your buck wise, I felt pretty ripped off. If this had been $15 and advertised as the coolest movie you’ll see this year; sure, sign me up. But the price point and billing it as immersive art felt like taking it a little too far. I did have an enjoyable time and liked looking at the imagery and listening to most of the music but this wasn’t the experience of a lifetime or unforgettable.
